Puget Sound Community School

Company Overview

PSCS, serving middle & high schoolers in Seattle's International District, was founded upon the belief that young people are intrinsically compelled by their own curiosity and desires to learn, and that when provided a positive and supportive environment (along with a wide variety of opportunities offered by interesting and engaging people) will enthusiastically pursue meaningful and challenging tasks.

Company History

With a group of dedicated parents and their children, educator Andy Smallman, along with his wife Melinda Shaw, founded PSCS in 1994 on the belief that young people thrive when they’re supported in pursuing their strengths and following their intrinsic motivation to learn.

Notable Accomplishments / Recognition

PSCS gained recognition in 2009 with the publication of Daniel H. Pink’s best-selling book Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us. Pink, a former White House speechwriter in the Clinton administration, wrote, “PSCS gives its students a radical dose of autonomy, turning the ‘one size fits all’ approach of conventional schools on its head.”

Benefits

A compassionate staff of talented and compelling people work together as a team to provide a nurturing, respectful and vibrant school environment for approximately 50 students in a multi-age setting.
