- Payroll Technician
Description
The Payroll Technician is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of payroll for all employees within the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District. This role supports the Payroll and Benefits Manager and Business Services, ensuring compliance with federal and state laws, district policies, collective bargaining agreements, and Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS) reporting. It requires strong attention to detail, confidentiality, organizational skills, and a high level of customer service.

- Ensures all deadlines are met
- Performs a variety of accounting functions for accurate entry of pay data for assigned employee groups; calculates and enters deductions; adjusts accruals and deferrals; processes and monitors overtime, supplemental, and special pay; makes other payroll calculations
- Updates employee information such as employee status changes; mandatory and voluntary deductions and benefits; payments and communication with third party administrators
- Prepares pay warrants, payroll reports and other correspondence for employees, buildings and administrators
- Responds to and resolves employee payroll-related questions and requests; provides assistance to employees in understanding their pay
- Maintains various payroll procedures and guidelines according to district policies, state and federal regulations, and collective bargaining agreements
- Supports payroll operations by monitoring workflow and identifying training needs to recommend improvements in efficiency and accuracy.
- Assists in evaluating training needs and offers recommendations to enhance team efficiency and accuracy
- Coordinates closely with Human Resources and Finance for data alignment
- Provides assistance and backup to payroll team members
- Comply with all applicable laws, rules, and authoritative guidance
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of payroll laws and best practices
- Supports year-end processes including tax filing and W-2 generation
- Participates in department and district meetings
- Works collaboratively within the professional learning community of the school and district
- Reports to work with regular and reliable attendance and punctuality
- Upholds board policy, district and building policies and goals
- Performs related duties as assigned
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED
A minimum of three years of general payroll experience in a large organization or experience working in a school district setting
Proficiency in spreadsheets and common business systems
Preferred Qualifications:
Associate degree in Accounting or a related field
Five years of general payroll experience in a school district or large organization
Payroll certification from Washington Association of School Business Officials (WASBO) or similar
Knowledge of Washington State Department of Retirement Services (DRS), Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), Washington Administrative Codes (WACs)/Revised Codes of Washington (RCWs)
Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic, and language diversity
