The City of Spokane is seeking aDirector of Emergency Communicationsto lead the launch of a state-of-the-art Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) serving the largest city in Eastern Washington. This is an exciting leadership opportunity to shape the future of emergency response in a growing and dynamic region. Nestled in the rolling hills of eastern Washington and situated along the I-90 corridor just 20 miles from the Idaho border, Spokane is a vibrant city of 230,000 and the cultural and economic heart of the Inland Northwest. Downtown centered around the scenic Spokane River, the city offers a thriving arts scene, a strong sense of community, and abundant access to public lands and year-round outdoor recreation. Spokane is also a proud college town, home to several universities that add energy, innovation, and opportunity to the region.
THE CITY OF SPOKANE
Incorporated in 1881, the City of Spokane operates under a strong mayor form of government, with leadership provided by an independently elected Mayor and a seven-member City Council, including a Council President. The City serves a population of approximately 230,000 residents across 70 square miles, supported by a 2025–2026 biennial budget of nearly $2.5 billion and a workforce of 2,814 full-time employees.
The Spokane Unified Network (SUN) is expected to serve both the City of Spokane and regional partners through mutual aid agreements, with an anticipated annual budget of approximately $18 million and a staff of about 80 FTEs, including 72 operational positions.

This is a unique opportunity to join the City of Spokane in establishing and expanding Washington State’s newest Emergency Communications Center – Spokane United 911 Network (SUN). The Director of Emergency Communications is a new position that will oversee the development and launch of SUN as the City’s primary PSAP, a stand-alone City department that serves as the dedicated call-taking and dispatch center for the City’s Fire, Police, and Emergency Medical Services.
